Listening is more than merely hearing words. Listening is an active process by which we receive, construct meaning from, and respond to spoken and nonverbal messages (Emmert, 1994).

Listening is the foundation of all other language arts (Rubin, 2000). Marzano, Pickering, and Pollick (2001) reinforce that the more students use all language forms (oral, print, and other media) in the classroom, the more opportunity they have to learn and become successful communicators.
